『水の国ミュージアム104°』は島根県桜江町(現江津市)の委託による中山間地の小さな町の地域文化施設である。初期計画から建築、展示、ランドスケープの設計・監理および運営プログラムまで担当し、完成まで約8年近くにおよぶ仕事となった。
標高500m級の山々に囲まれた河谷状の盆地地形は蛇行しながら貫流する江の川と一体化し、隔絶された桃源郷を想わせ、時として川霧が立ち込める風景は水墨画のような風景を描き、とめどなく美しいの山里の手つかずの自然が圧倒的な力で語りかける。一方、町の人々はこの江の川が幾たびも氾濫し洪水災害をもたらした歴史と長く深くかかわりながら暮らしを繋いできた。町によるこの事業計画のルーツはここにある。
建築計画はこの地域の歴史と風土という文脈の解読から始めた。蛇行する川に沿う河岸段丘、石積みの棚田、茶畑。点在する民家、くらしを結ぶ村落を歩き、伝統の神楽を体験し、民俗文化を知る。これらのフィールドワークから地域の形象的な記憶を抽出し、建築に再編し、この地の心象風景の可視化を試みた。
施設内容は｢水」を主題にした施設であり、また敷地地盤が低く冠水する可能性があり、コンセプトに「文化の方舟」をすえた。これは洪水伝説の修辞的な手法かもしれないが、地域に根差した形象性を強く捉える事が出来れば違和感がなく風景に同化すると考えた。地域に見られる野石積で石垣護岸を築き、洪水時の記録から最高レベルの水位より高い位置に直方体状の漆黒の方舟建築を架構した。
Summary
Museums 104°are the cultural facilities built by the local government. This district is a beautiful environment like Shangri-La blessed. It remains here, without developing a life in plentiful natural environment and a quiet farm village. However, since the large river which flows through the center of this district sometimes overflows, there is history which encounters the damage of a flood. From such a background, the cultural facilities which made the art and science of water the theme were planned. This institution is realized in the museum and the citizen park. There are several exhibition room, storehouse, administration office, cafe, art sculpture garden, riverfront park, etc.
The people in this area sometimes build a house on the stone bank protection to stop damage of a flood. It is called MIZUYA. This is a traditional architectural style in this area. Therefore architecture concept was compared to a Noah's ark. That is because there is a relation with as close history of an area as a flood. Moreover, the construction ground has the low foundation because of a dry riverbed, and when it is a flood, a site is covered with water. In order to protect a building from a flood, the building was placed after three circular shore protection.
Furthermore, the traditional material of areas, such as a stone of a river, plaster, and wood siding was used as a method of showing the feature of this area. The landscape design secured a large pond and a large cascade in the center, and the Sculpture Garden.
